Island Games Memories memories
1985 Inter Islamd Games (Isle of Man Team) I was aged 11 and came away with a bronze medal in one of the relays!
Orkney Mens Swim Team who won a gold and 2 silvers and a 4th in the relays that year. Hanson also won the Gold in the mens 50m Free. The records that Hanson, and the boys set that year are still standing 30 years on as Orkney records.
Orkney Mens Swim Team who won a gold, and 2 silvers in the relays that year.
I was lucky enough to compete at 3 Games, Aland, in 1991, IOW in 1993 and then Gibraltar in 1995. All were totally different, and all just the best experiences. I made friends from these games for life, and still in touch with many.
First time towing the caravan. Our adventure began on the Northlink boat north to Shetland ( from Orkney ). This was a daytime special sailing for Shetland 2005.
Brian Johnston - 2005 Football Final!
Golden Blues, 2005 – the community, not just the men’s football team!
Poul Peterson - Greenland team at the 2023 opening ceremony in Guernsey
A big thank you to Poul Peterson from Greenland, for sharing this image from previous Island Games that he has captured.
Island Games summary - Sean Fotheringhame
Each games was a fantastic experience, both for providing high level sporting competition, but more broadly, to make friends with people from both my home island and other parts of the world, particularly when I was lucky enough to return a few times and see people every couple of years.
My Third Games - Sean Fotheringhame - Bermuda 2013
My 3rd games was in Bermuda in 2013. This was a real highlight, we were staying in the same accommodation as several other sports and island teams (often not the case for golf locations), which was also a venue for volleyball and across the road from athletics and swimming.
My Second Games - Sean Fotheringhame - 2011 on Isle of Wight
My 2nd games was in the Isle of Wight - I had to get up at 7am the morning after my graduation party to catch a flight and make it to the island in time for the practice round - again missing the opening ceremony (golf is always a struggle to fit in!). I remember the one golf course being near the town where many other sports were taking part, so you could really feel and hear the buzz around the area much more than Åland, and it was great to get to see and cheer on our teammates in other sports.
My first games - Sean Fotheringhame
My 1st games was in Åland in 2009. We weren’t able to make it to the opening ceremony due to practice schedules, but we got in to Mariehamm centre where there was a stage with entertainment on each evening.
