Golden Blues, 2005 – the community, not just the men’s football team!
I’m biased of course but the last event of the 2005 Island Games held in Shetland was the icing on a cake of great success for the host island.
The gold medal final between the previous winners Guernsey and hosts Shetland was a game watched by a crowd estimated to be around the six thousand mark.
Against all odds the hosts won the game 2-0 with goals from Captain John Montgomery and Duncan Bray. It’s worth noting the names of the 20 players who did Shetland proud that week and capped a fine week across the County.
Stuart Hay, Peter Peterson, Kevin Main, Bobby Wiseman, Leighton Flaws, Merv Jamieson, Craig Dinwoodie, Alan Duncan, Karl Williamson, Grant Gilfillan, Dominic Mann, Stuart Smith, Robert Geddes, Ross Jamieson, Michael Johnson, Duncan Bray, Ian Bray, Steven Umphray, James Johnston, John Montgomery.
I was the football coordinator for the Island Games football competitions for the 2005 Games and all the hard work over several years became very much worth the effort on that final day.
Brian Johnston.
