Anne Stewart - Remembering a great sporting week with pride

The Games really woke me up. I am a non sporty person. It has just never been my thing - I planned to sew all week.

Unfortunately I missed the opening ceremony due to a family commitment. I came back on the Sunday night having become aware online how amazing the atmosphere was. My son who lives in Glasgow came home for a few days to decorate my kitchen.

Iain and I did NOT follow our planned activities. Instead we were swept up in Games fever, enjoying every minute. The atmosphere was wonderful. I was privileged to be chosen as a community champion and awarded medals for swimming - WHAT A PRIVILEGE!!  I can’t even swim!

While watching I realised that it wasn’t about medals. It was about doing your personal best. The young relay team from the Faeroes were incredibly excited about something as were their coaches. They were awarded bronze medals but you’d think they had won gold. Their achievement was that they had broken their own record. They couldn’t have been more excited. This was a steep learning curve for me.

I also repaired the Islands Games Flag but only realised its significance at the closing ceremony.

The Games were a great boost to the community and provided us with something we could all be proud of and chat about in a way that we hadn’t really done since Covid.

It was a fantastic week which will be remembered with pride.

Well done all
